Dave Sheppard,

an accomplished printmaker and painter, combines human and animal forms, creating images that are at times unsettling and fantastical. Sheppard typically explores the dark side of the human condition: as he himself says, his work relies on metaphors, narratives, and symbolism.

Dave Portrait 1“Combining animal heads on human bodies, my artwork is a metaphorical examination of what it is to be human. The Anthropomorphic figures draw a parallel between the animal world and the human world. This allows the themes and emotions expressed throughout my art to be understood universally rather than specifically. Much like an Aesop Fable or native legend, Crow and Fox are simply stand- ins for me, you, or anyone.

With these ‘characters’ in place I choose to explore the more difficult and challenging aspects of being human. Themes involving grief, loss, fear, mental disorders, phobias and anxieties are but a few of many emotional and cognitive experiences that
we all as humans deal with at some point in, or throughout, our lives. ”

Dave Sheppard was born in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and moved to Bishop’s Falls Newfoundland at the age of five. He graduated from the Fine Arts program at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in 2001, where he subsequently held two artist residencies. Dave was nominated for emerging artist of the year, and designed the Bishop’s Falls municipal town flag in 2000. Sheppard has exhibited his work in Canada, the United States, and Luxembourg. He has been awarded the Don Wright scholarship at St. Michael’s Printshop (2001) as well as a provincial Arts and Letters Award.

Dave Sheppard currently lives and works at his Square Wheel Studio in Toronto.
